#3: Monumentality

On the ground, architecture and urbanism seem to be gigantic in a surreal way. Things feel overbuilt, yet barely hanging on to their materiality. Vast expanses of concrete, asphalt, metal go sprawling over what their functionality requires. Everything is kept scrupulously clean; green and mold must be kept off the mineral at all costs. Do human structures need to be so massive to stand up to the living, encroaching natural fabric that they usurp? It all seems to scream “civilization is here, nature is there, and keep it that way.”
